Why most "best of" lists here are useless

Text-based RPG lists routinely put a single-player branching novel next to a twenty-year-old multiplayer crime economy next to a command-line dungeon from 1997. All three are excellent. None of them substitutes for another. A list that ranks them against each other is ranking a book against a football league.

So this is grouped by what you are after. Pick the group first, then the game. And a standing caveat: this genre changes quietly - games do not announce that they have gone quiet, they just do. Everything below is worth checking for yourself before you commit a month.

How to judge any of them in five minutes

Open the public market. Live listings with recent timestamps mean a live economy. An empty market or prices that have not moved in weeks tells you everything.

Open public chat. Has anyone spoken today? A quiet chat in a multiplayer text game is the single most reliable death signal, and it is visible before you register.

Look for dated patch notes. Not a roadmap - roadmaps are free to publish. Something shipped, with a date on it, in the last month or two.

Check whether the leaderboard has moved. A stable top ten does not establish that progression is impossible. Look for meaningful goals for new players and check what the ranking actually measures.

Check it on your actual device. Loading on a phone is not the same as being playable on one. Try a real session before building a character.
